GQL Essentials

Book Overview

This book combines descriptions of the normative requirements of the Graph Query Language (GQL) as standardized in ISO/IEC 39075, a synthesis of relevant literature, and an explanatory mathematical reconstruction and model developed for this book; the GQL standard itself remains the normative source. Part I combines cited historical literature with an example-based exposition of the language, Parts II to X primarily develop the explanatory reconstruction of the standard’s data model and requirements, and Part XI synthesizes cited extension proposals and research literature. The remainder of this book is organized as follows:

  • Part I – Introduction sketches the motivation, background, and running example.
  • Part II – Core Model and Patterns fixes the property-graph data model and basic patterns.
  • Part III – Expressions and Algebra introduces expressions and the algebra of binding tables.
  • Part IV – Paths and Regular Path Expressions explains paths, path modes, and regular path expressions.
  • Part V – Aggregation and Ordering covers grouping, aggregation, ordering, and pagination.
  • Part VI – Data Modification defines inserts, deletes, and updates over property graphs.
  • Part VII – Types, Schemas, and Constraints presents typing, DDL, and integrity constraints.
  • Part VIII – Catalogs, Sessions, and Procedures describes catalog objects, sessions, and procedures.
  • Part IX – Transactions and Concurrency develops the transaction model and isolation guarantees.
  • Part X – Security and Diagnostics treats authorization, errors, and diagnostic reporting.
  • Part XI – Future Directions outlines possible extensions and open research directions.
